The following morning he woke up to visit the toilet. While he was up he called Mr Wiggins and told him he was too ill to go into work.

“What’s wrong with you?” Mr Wiggins asked in his usual gruff manner.

“I just don’t feel well,” he replied before hanging up.

He went back to bed and fell asleep. Later that morning the phone rang. He heard it as part of dream and didn’t bother to answer it. He didn’t care who it was. Probably Mr Wiggins calling to check up on him.

He called in again Tuesday.

“You’d better get yourself a doctor’s certificate,” Mr Wiggins barked. “That’s two days in a row.”

“I’m not paying to see a doctor,” Alexander replied bluntly. “I’ll be in tomorrow.”

He pushed the button and hung up on Mr Wiggins. He couldn’t care less if he got fired. It would please him no end to see Mr Wiggins try and deliver the mail.

On Wednesday Alexander showered and dressed for work knowing there was no way he’d be bumping into Adam. Two days of rest had done wonders, though he still didn’t feel his usual self.

“Where’s that doctor’s certificate?” Mr Wiggins asked the second he spotted Alexander coming through the door.

“I don’t have one,” Alexander replied.

“Then I’ll have to let you go. I warned you. Young Cliff Harrison helped me out yesterday and the day before. Glad of the work he was, too. Unlike some people. Cheaper, too. ”

“I’ve barely had more than a week off the entire time…Ah forget it. You’re just a miserable old cunt who’s stuck in this shit-heap of a town. Thanks for giving me the kick in the pants I needed.”

There was no remorse for what he had said. Mr Wiggins was a grumpy old man. One who could always find fault, but had a damned hard time finding anything to praise. He walked back to his house and sat on the front step to contemplate his future.
